I love knit and I love crochet, and I wanted to design a small project that would include both. These handwarmers are so simple, but I thought I'd share the pattern to give you the numbers and measurements and all that. Feel free to adjust them to fit your hands; the only thing you need to keep in tact is the original cast on, just keeping a multiple of 4.
Materialssize US 7 (4.5 mm) dpn'sE (3.5mm) crochet hookDK weight yarn in contrasting colorsPattern (US terminology)Cuff:CO 32 (onto dpn's, or circulars for magic loop method)K2 P2 for 7 rnds, BO (using jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind off)Body:Join second color and SC in each st bound off on the cuff. (32 sc)HDC in each st around until entire handwarmer measures approx 3 1/2 inches.Thumb hole:Chain 8, skip 8 HDC, continue HDC around.HDC in BLO of the chain 8 (the "bump" on the chain), creating "V's" on bottom and top of thumb hole.Finishing:Continue HDC around for 5 rounds, tie off yarn. Join first color and HDC for 1 round. Tie off and weave in ends.
It would be easy to substitute the DK weight I used for worsted weight, if you want. Just take out a few stitches to make them fit your hands. My finished handwarmers measure 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 (my hand width is 3 inches, and since crochet is much less stretchy than knit, I added half an inch to the width of the handwarmer to give some room).
I'm working to get all my winter items photographed and ready to list sometime end of August/beginning of September, so while these aren't up for sale yet, they most likely will be! Check out my Etsy shop if you're interested.
(or I might just keep them for myself, I love these things.)
have a great weekend!
